A bit about the University of Hertfordshire Students' Union

We are a students’ union for the students at University of Hertfordshire. We employ 30 professional staff and this includes 4 elected sabbatical officers. We also employ approximately 100 students in part time positions in our Bars, Welcome Desk, Marketing and Activities team. Our vision is to help our students love life at Herts. We have a diverse student body but this is not reflective in our staffing team. As such, we work hard to ensure all student views are represented.

What was your organisation’s approach to FREDIE (Fairness, Respect, Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Engagement) before embarking on the Investors in Diversity Award for Small Charities journey?

We have always prioritised on Diversity and Inclusion and fairness is one of our overarching themes. We work hard to communicate with our staff, students and customers and try and be as inclusive as we can. We currently have two staff representative committees (student and staff), here is where the senior team meet with representatives to give them a voice.

What were your top 3 reasons for embarking on the Investors in Diversity Award for Small Charities journey?

Whilst we have prioritised Diversity & Inclusion, we have been doing things alone and value expertise and the advice of a professional body like yourselves. We also wanted to give our students/staff the reassurance that we are taking this seriously and are using every means possible to make improvements. The last reason is we wish to be accredited and have a plan to move forward with.

What have been the top 3 benefits for your organisation since achieving the Investors in Diversity Award for Small Charities?

Since gaining the award, we have renewed confidence in our current practices, been able to re-assure the University that we are focused on representing and supporting our diverse student community and also, we were able to communicate this success to all of our partners.
